One of the most memorable members of Charlotte Blues Society was Marie Rink. Marie was usually the first on the dance floor at a blues show and the the last to leave. All of us have experienced her positive energy and wonderful smile and laugh. Sadly we lost that sweet spirit in 2016, but we remember her here. Marie was special: loving, fun with a zeal for living. She is greatly missed, and thought of with a smile. We know she is dancing in the heavens.
Thank you John Hartley!
The world famous Double Door Inn opened its doors in 1973 and has the distinction of being the oldest same owner live music/ blues venue on the East coast. But the clock stopped ticking the building was silenced after January 2, 2017 when another part of Charlotte's music scene was sentenced to destruction by the wrecking ball.
The Double Door Inn was home to the Charlotte Blues Society since our beginning. No surprise since owner Nick Karras was one of the core reasons for the group.
The music made inside those walls will be forever remembered by those who were there. Some of the stories were capture in "Charlotte's Home of the Blues- 40 Years of the Double Door Inn" by Daniel Coston and Debby Wallace. The documentary of The Double Door Inn was filmed throughout the last year of it's existence and is available on DVD.
The greats played this room: Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric johnson, Koko Taylor, if it was blues and they were traveling through, they would play the Double Door. If you listened, you mayhave heard them playing in the background. Many claimed to feel the spirits of those who once performed in that special place left a part of themselves there. Every local artist yearned to play the DDI stage. It was on every bucket list and the jams began to fill with those that knew their only chance to step on that famous stage was limited.
The last Charlotte Blues Society event was held on New Years Day with the Red Dirt Revelators performing. The jam that followed was memorable, with old members showing up for that historic night. Sadly the doors closed after the Monday Night AllStarsplayed their final gig on Monday January 2, 2017. The lines extended beyond the parking for a night where the Blues hit home for all who frequented this historic spot.
Good times gone: not forgotten.
